Reshaping the Tornado Belt will introduce you to some of the pioneer residents of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks. However, if the book leaves you wanting to know more about some of these early residents, this section is for you! Many of the early residents of both cities went on to become mayors, bank presidents, county officials, business owners, and state and national office holders. Many of the early residents loved the country they settled, and remained in the Grand Forks or East Grand Forks area for the rest of their lives. Others, however, left for milder climates in the West and Southwest in their later years. Quite a few of the early pioneers lived well into their sixties, seventies, and eighties, while others died relatively young. Several pioneers were veterans of the Civil War. A good number of the new immigrants came from Ontario, Canada, while many others made the trek northwest from St. Paul, Minnesota. Other than coming from St. Paul, many of the earliest residents came from Henderson, Minnesota.
