Pioneer Hotel Owner Dies Here. Miss Catherine Ryan, pioneer resident and hotel owner, died late Tuesday (July 31, 1945) at her home, 1604 Lewis boulevard, following a short illness. Miss Ryan, who was born 80 years ago in Ontario, Canada, came here with her father, Thomas, in 1881, one year after the railroad reached Grand Forks from Fisher’s Landing. Preceding Miss Ryan to Grand Forks were two brothers, James, later Grand Forks police chief, in 1878, and Hugh, who also became police chief, in 1879. Miss Ryan built the Ryan hotel in 1927, at the site on which her brother built the Commercial hotel in 1883. Miss Ryan, the last survivor of her family, was a member of St. Michael’s church and belonged to the Altar society. Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Miss Catherine Ryan. Funeral services for Miss Catherine Ryan, 80, prominent pioneer and hotel owner who died Monday night at her home, have been tentatively set for Friday at 9 A. M. in St. Michael’s church, with Rev. William McNamee officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. The body will lie in state in the Norman funeral home from 2 P. M. today until the services. Oppegard, Ed Stinson, M. D. Butler, M. J. Colton, James Lyons, Ralph Lynch, Fred Orth, John P. Kennedy, C. J. Murphy, Dr. R. D. Campbell, Michael Sullivan, Charles Ryan, Harry Harm, J. J. Dunlap, E. J. Lander, D. J. McDonald, Albert Collins, Lawrence O’Connor, John McGuire, Maurice Sullivan and Joseph LaBoda. Rev. William McNamee will officiate, with burial in Calvary cemetery.
