Grand Forks Fair in 1911

After the historic fair the previous year, Grand Forks would settle for no less than a repeat of the “flying game’s” excitement.  However, this time, the 1911 Grand Forks Fair planners brought a two pronged approach.  First, they contracted with the Wright Brothers to bring Philip O. Parmelee to town to fly another Wright Brothers airplane.  Second, the favorite local aviator, Thomas McGoey, would also fly.  There was no doubt that aviation fever was high once again, although it would be impossible to replicate the first flights of the previous year.  However, Parmelee and McGoey did their best to bring a great show to Grand Forks.  A deadly trend would continue for the Grand Forks Fair performers.  Philip Parmelee was killed in an airplane crash in Washington in 1912.
